Known as the "Face Doctor," Gary Faigin has been investigating, teaching and writing about the artistic depiction of facial expressions for over four decades. His internationally-renowned book, “The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression,” is the standard work for analog, digital and forensic artists on the subject and has been used throughout the CGI industry as a reference for characters and creatures in movies like Shrek, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Harry Potter and Paddington Bear.

Today, Faigin works as a facial expression trainer and consultant to media studios, creative agencies, animation schools, robot designers, forensic artists and plastic/reconstructive surgeons in North America and Europe. As an artist and instructor, Faigin combines his latest research working with computer vision scientists at the University of Washington with his engaging teaching style to every training and consulting session he leads.

why hire the face doctor for your media project?

  • Artistic misfires are costing your design studio time and money.

  • Poor character design/rigging is limiting the range of emotions of your digital actors -- realistic, stylized, or animal.

  • You need more detail and subtlety in areas of the face than your Mocap can provide.

  • Your animators, or your engineers, require more in-depth training/consulting in facial expressions.

  • You want smart, fast solutions to developing clever facial stylizations.

Faigin's exclusive trainings provide your team members with the tools and mentoring they need to create more authentic facial expressions for your creative projects. Your company keeps all in-house videos of Faigin presentations for staff-wide professional development. If consulting is desired, Faigin can work with your team, in-house or remotely.
