What's in a Smile?

As the Artistic Director of Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, and author of, “The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression,” I am capping my six-part lecture series on "Drawing the Features of the Head" with a one-hour ZOOM lecture on facial expressions, suitable for CG artists, forensic artists, character designers and animators of realistic and stylized characters.

My presentation  surveys the key elements of the six cardinal facial expressions: 

• SURPRISE - Binary expression
• FEAR - Most challenging expression
• DISGUST - Three active areas
• ANGER - The glare; full face
• SADNESS - Crying vs. miserable
• JOY - Smiling and laughing
